The Hills - MTV

Erin has taken to watching a TV show called The Hills. Actually, I get the impression (given her intimate knowledge of the show) that she's been watching it for a while - probably while I was at work when I worked nights.

One outcome of being home at night is that, sooner or later, we revert to the things we enjoy or are familiar with. So, wife occasionally stops on the MTV channel and watches The Hills. When I did some searching (Google) I discovered that this show was being touted as reality TV.

I have a problem with that designation. And yet, where does one start?

The show allegedly follows a girl, and her friends, after she graduates from high school and as she tries to enter the world of fashion. In the episodes I've sat through (I try to read or work on other things) she is an intern with TeenVogue and is in Paris for some fashion related show. She also meets a band and is taken on a ride through Paris on the back of a scooter.

After watching a few of these episodes, I've decided that this is "reality" only in the sense that there is no word-for-word script of the acting. Rather, I get the impression that the director places the actors (and they are all actors) in a scene and says, "You are going to discuss a new job and," pointing at the girl allegedly wanting the job, "you are going to say anything to get it."

Or, "You are mad at him because he just showed up. You want to separate for a while, but not break up, go...."

In short, these people are cast. They are, allegedly, actors who are told to be themselves and just make up the dialogue as they go along. The problem with the show is that the acting is bad, the dialogue is bad, the situations are totally unbelievable, and the outcome is that people don't have the successes, journey's, and relationships that are had on the show. Most of the show, dialogue, is one "actor" reminding another about past scenes in past episodes so that there is continuity in the scene.

The outcome (for me) is a hard time trying to understand why Erin wants to watch this show and why she puts up with it. It's just bad.
